What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy - it might be a word you’re hearing quite a bit these days or maybe it’s the first you’re hearing of it and you’re intrigued as to what it’s all about. Well it turns out that it’s not some new craze, essential oils and the myriad benefits of aromatherapy have been reaped for quite some time.
The ancient practice of aromatherapy, dates back over 3,500 years ago when ancient civilisations drew on the healing essential oils in many of their customs and rituals. Essential oils are extracted from botanicals, usually by distillation and capture the plant’s scent. Today, with life moving at a fast pace, along with the rise in those experiencing Mental Health issues, aromatherapy seems to bear more significance than ever. The use of healing essential oils and the effect of their aromas on wellbeing offers a natural, holistic approach to every day self care.
Our sense of smell is directly linked to the brain, which is why we react in different ways to each scent. As a person inhales an essential oil, molecules attach to nerves which send the information to the olfactory system in the brain which communicates directly with our centre for emotions. Using essential oils for wellbeing can enhance our physiological and emotional state.
Sleep
Studies have found lavender essential oil to be beneficial in supporting relaxation, sleep and well-being (Benjamin J. Malcolm, PharmD, MPH1 and Kimberly Tallian, 2018).
Stress
Clary sage is revered for it’s tension relieving effects. Studies suggest that breathing in the aroma of clary sage oil may be effective in promoting relaxation. (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2013).
Anxiety
CBD oil is derived directly from the hemp plant and is used to address anxiety, sleep issues and chronic pain. This part of the plant does not contain the “high” THC and is non-psychoactive. Studies suggest CBD has considerable potential as a treatment for anxiety (Esther M. Blessing, Maria M. Steenkamp, Jorge Manzanares, and Charles R. Marmar1, 2015). The endocannabinoid system in the body is involved in regulating hormones responsible for sleep and mood. Cannabinoid receptors in the body absorb CBD and can play a role in balancing hormone levels related to stress and anxiety.
